Mixed Media Drawing Course

The Program Focus

This program develops a powerful artistic foundation by mastering the interaction of various materials, creating works that sit on the fine line between classical drawing and professional painting.

Questions You Will Answer

Layering and Logic

How do you effectively combine graphite and pastel with water-based paints? We explore the structural logic of layering—whether following a classical sequence or a creative, spontaneous order.

Media Synergy

How can tools like airbrushes, markers, and dry pigments be used alongside traditional brushes to achieve depth and texture?

Mastery of Detail

How do you execute precise detailing using ink, pens, and fine brushes to bring a piece to its final, professional polish?

Historical and Modern Context

How did masters like Dürer and Da Vinci use these techniques? How are these methods applied today in digital industries and character design?

Program Content and Technical Mastery

Advanced Material Science

You will gain comprehensive knowledge of pigments, alcohol-based markers, India ink, and various water-based media like tempera, aquarelle, gouache, and acrylic. You will learn to work on diverse surfaces including paper, cardboard, and wood, understanding how each substrate responds to different media.

Technique and Execution

The course covers everything from foundational graphite sketching to advanced finishing. You will master classical drawing techniques, the rendering of drapery, and specialized application methods using airbrushes or sponges to achieve unique atmospheric effects.

Professional Versatility

The skills gained here are highly sought after in modern industry, from children's book illustration and fashion design to architectural visualization. We also explore how these physical works are digitized for use in graphic design and the video game industry.

Artistic and Philosophical Heritage

Mastering mixed media allows an artist to break free from the constraints of a single medium. By mastering both dry and wet techniques, you build a versatile technical base that supports both monochrome realism and vibrant, multi-layered compositions. Whether you aim for gallery-level fine art or commercial illustration, this course provides the tools to produce works of professional depth and complexity.

Course Duration and Individual Pace

The full curriculum is structured as a comprehensive path of 40 double sessions or 80 academic hours, which includes the student's essential self-work. However, as these are private individual sessions, the total time required to master the material is flexible; it adapts entirely to your personal progress, artistic background, and the time you dedicate to practice. There are no rigid deadlines and no grades; the focus is exclusively on your individual mastery of the craft and the quality of your artistic development.

Format and Logistics

The training is conducted as private individual sessions with the teacher traveling to the student's home for maximum comfort and efficiency. You choose your package of 1, 5, or 10 lessons. Note that all materials and equipment are not included. Lessons are conducted in Basel, Basel-Landschaft, and bordering suburbs of Germany and France.
