Academic Drawing Course

The Program Focus

Graphics are the bedrock of all visual arts. While painting communicates through color and emotion, graphics speak the language of line, stroke, and contrast. This program focuses on developing the cognitive and physical mastery required to render the world with precision and character.

Questions You Will Answer

The Human Form

How do you accurately construct the human face and body? What are the secrets to achieving realistic proportions and capturing the essence of a subject?

Composition and Scale

Why do some drawings fail to fit the paper, and how do you master spatial planning? How do you measure objects with your eye to ensure perfect scale every time?

The Logic of Light

How is light and shadow created to give a flat surface three-dimensional volume? How do you manage transitions between sharp contrasts and soft gradients?

Overcoming the Blank Page

What should you do when a drawing feels 'stuck'? You will learn to view mistakes as part of the structural process, removing the fear of the white canvas.

Program Content and Technical Mastery

The Power of the Freehand Stroke

In an era of projectors and AI, the art of the 'free hand' is becoming a rare and elite skill. This course rejects stencils in favor of developing a true biological 'handwriting.' You will learn to hold the hand correctly, creating effortless circles and fluid lines that form the skeleton of any great work. This process enhances spatial imagination and fine motor coordination, allowing for creative freedom that mechanical aids cannot provide.

Material Science and Specialized Media

You will gain a professional understanding of the interaction between media and substrate. We study diverse paper types tailored for graphite, charcoal, and pastel. The curriculum covers the taxonomy of graphite grades, professional methods for sharpening lead cores, and the correct use of various erasers, blending stumps (tortillions), and fixative varnishes. We also introduce the sophisticated 'Dry Brush' technique, bridging the gap between drawing and painting.

Anatomical Foundation and Texture

Anatomy is the most vital pillar of graphics. We focus on the realistic forms of the human body, providing the necessary base for any future work in color. You will master the 'stroke'—learning to control line thickness and density. Beyond graphite, we explore the deep blacks of natural and compressed charcoal and the vibrant layering of soft and hard pastels to create professional-grade textures.

Artistic and Philosophical Heritage

Mastering freehand drawing is a profound cognitive exercise that builds a direct connection between perception and execution. Unlike tracing, which limits you to a single form, freehand drawing allows you to evolve the image as you work. This course transforms the student from a craftsman into an artist with a signature style, providing a technical foundation that is respected in both classical galleries and modern design industries.

Course Duration and Individual Pace

The full curriculum is structured as a comprehensive path of 40 double sessions or 80 academic hours, which includes the student's essential self-work. However, as these are private individual sessions, the total time required to master the material is flexible; it adapts entirely to your personal progress, artistic background, and the time you dedicate to practice. There are no rigid deadlines and no grades; the focus is exclusively on your individual mastery of the craft and the quality of your artistic development.

Format and Logistics

The training is conducted as private individual sessions with the teacher traveling to the student's studio or home, for maximum comfort and efficiency. You choose your package of 1, 5, or 10 lessons. Note that all necessary materials and equipment are not included in the session cost. Lessons are conducted in Basel, Basel-Landschaft, and bordering suburbs of Germany and France.
